SOME SIXTY of the country's hundred largest companies have replied to a letter from Transport Minister Fred Mulley saying that they would be willing to take part in discussions concerning the transference of any further proportion of freight from road to rail. The Department of the Environment says that the discussions, when they do take place, will take months and in the case of some of the larger companies years to complete.
A spokesman for the DoE denied reports in last weekend's Sunday Telegraph that industry had rejected the idea of transference in "all but a few specialized corners of the freight market".
