LORRY Driver Albertus Van Der Meulen, 27, of Putney, London, was jailed for four years at Canterbury last week after admitting knowingly facilitating the entry of illegal immigrants.
A Customs officer suspicious about Van Der Meulen's lorry at Dover shouted: "Are you all right in there?" Back came the reply "Yes" and 22 illegal Asian immigrants, hidden among bales of material, were discovered.
Van Der Meulen, a bankrupt owing £50,000, also admitted driving while disqualified and was sentenced to six months' imprisonment to run concurrently.
Judge John Gower, QC, said it was a grave crime with the possibility of health risks that "made the imagination boggle".
