• Poultry company Sun Valley has admitted that 18,000 chickens died from the heat while being transported to one of its factories last week.
The dead birds represented about 10% of the day's intake at Sun Valley's Grandstand Road factory in Hereford. Spokeswoman, Amanda Williams says: 'Although everything was done to help the birds, the sharp rise in temperature and the humidity caught us by surprise..
"There is a very stringent procedure for dealing with hot days—we attempt to maximise ventilation and minimise holding and transit times." Williams adds that the number of birds in each crate had already been reduced because of the heat.
• Animal welfare groups have recently called for tighter transit regulations (CM 21-27 June).
