S. ti Wasey, of the Hermitage, Berks, to take over the business of Mr. S. G. Povey, who held an A licence for two vehicles (5 tons) was refused, last Friday, by Sir Henry Piggott, SouthEastern Licensing Authority. The application was opposed by the Lambourne Race Course Transport Co. and Major Borwick, who were represented by Mr. T. D. Corpe, and others.
The evidence established that both vehicles were fully occupied and that the business was being run at a profit. An agreement had been entered into to pay £400 for the vehicles and £400 for the goodwill. In cross-examination, Mr. Povey admitted that his business was principally that of the transport of livestock and agricultural produce, an'd that his vehicles were unsuitable for horses.
Mr. Corpe submitted that an .A licence should not be granted, as the applicant would then be in a position to buy horseboxes in substitution for the present vehicles, and run anywhere with them. Further, on a B licence he could, and should, be restricted from carrying other than farm livestock and agricultural produce.
The Licensing Authority intimated that he was not prepared to grant an A licence, but he would republish the application and grant a B licence for two vehicles restricted to the carriage of livestock, other than hunters and racehorses, and agricultural implements, within a radius not exceeding 50 miles.
