the makers recommend should be operated at a maximum gross weight of 17 tons 17 cwt although it has been operated successfully from new for 31 years at 20 tons. What gross weight will I be legally allowed to operate at after January 1 1968?

If the vehicle can meet these figures at 20 tons gross it will be in order. But at some date later annual testing of commercial vehicles will be plated for maximum weight which for your Super Reiver will be the original design figure of 17 tons 17 cwt.
