• A suggestion that terms of employment of heavy goods vehicle drivers should be investigated by the DoE has been put to the Eastern Accident Prevention Federation at Thetford, Norfolk.
A member representing Canvey Island rural council said that her council had heard several cases where drivers had to comply with such stringent timetables that the least delay meant they subsequently had to drive at excessive and sometimes dangerous speeds to make up their journey times. Mr W. Roe, councillor for Norwich City and a former lorry driver, said he was concerned about some of the bonus schemes and productivity deals which, he felt, led to troubles. Some of the schemes, he said, were badly formulated and ought to be examined.
The Federation agreed to ask its general purposes committee to consider a resolution calling on RoSPA to approach the DoE to investigate the matter with particular reference to badly instituted bonus productivity schemes which could lead to the overloading or speeding of vehicles.
