CERAMIC insulation for certain diesel engine components is predicted for production engines by the early Nineties, according to Deutz.
The West German engine company is currently working on the use of pre-fabricated ceramic liners for the exhaust ports with the work being sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Technology.
According to Emile Lichtner of Deutz, testing has shown that engine efficiency is only improved by insulating the exhaust ports; there is little or no improvement associated with the use of ceramics actually inside the combustion chambers.
The use of the ceramic exhaust port liner in development engines has shown an improvement in engine efficiency of three per cent.
In contrast to the current production Deutz engines which use a cast iron exhaust manifold, the insulated version is of aluminium with the ceramic core cast in as a liner.
