The new session of the Institute of Transport opened yesterday in the lecture theatre of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, London, W.C.2, when Mr. R. H. Selbie, C.B.E., delivered his presidential address.

The annual general meeting of the Institute is to be held at the same place on Monday, November 1st, whilst the annual dinner, which was postponed from the spring in consequence of the railway strike, will be held at the Hotel Cecil on Thursday, November 18th.

The dinner of the Yorkshire Local Section was held at Leeds on Friday last, and on the same day the dinner of the North-Eastern Local Section took place at Newcastle-on-Tyne.

Seven premium awards have been made by the council, the Road (Passenger) Gold Medal given by the London General Omnibus Co., Ltd., having been awarded to Mr. Walter Jackson for his 'paper on "Electric and Petrol Transport of Passengers in America."

It has been decided that the Instis tute's silver medal for students shall be annually awarded for the best paper submitted by a student dealing with each of the principal forms of transport alternatively mid covering the economics and operation of each form.

Subjects for the new session include : "-The Economic Advantages and Limitations of mad Transport as a Competitor to Railway Carriage."

The examinations next year will be held at the end of April, and centres will be established for the purpose in London, Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Leeds and Manchester, whilst, if there are sufficient candidates, the council is prepared to hold examinations overseas. Examination syllabuses are now ready at the offices of the Institute. Amongst the papers to be read before the Institute this session are one, on January 3rd, by Mr. Frank Pick, assistant managing director of the London General Omnibus Co., Ltd., on "Growth and Form in a Modern City," and one, on February 7th, by Mr. C. le M. Gosselin, entitled "A Survey of Road Transport." ■.■
