THETFORD WASTE RECYCLER Pearsons could not give its latest contract the cold shoulder: it is handling waste from the coldest place on earth —Antarctica, The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) has appointed Pearsons to collect waste generated by scientists working at its survey stations on the continent.

Three truckloads of segregated recyclable material, including paper, cardboard. plastic, aluminium, steel, glass and fabric, have already been collected at Grimsby docks and brought back to Pearsons' Thetford, Norfolk base for sorting and recycling. BAS chose the company because it is able to handle all the recyclable waste produced without leaving Anarctica, Pearsons MD Jo Pearson says: "We pride ourselves on being able to handle just about anything — but recycling waste from Antarctica is un usual, even for us! Previously. BAS had returned some materials to the UK for recycling. hut much more had been landfilled on the Falkland Islands."

Pearsons is one of the region's largest waste recyclers, employing 90 people.
