T" years of study in Holland, France and Italy by R. A. Dyson and Co. Ltd. is embodied in the design of Dyson semi-trailers with TIR bodies to be operated by M.A.T. Transport Ltd. The units will be used on a London-to-Paris service via the Dover-Dunkirk ferry.
Practical experience of M.A.T. Transport has also influenced the design of the bodies. which includes a number of interesting features. A tubular framework used to support the cover sheet is very strong and rigid but can be dismantled easily. The vertical members are located in the posts between the hinged sides and at the body corners. The canvas cover (made by William Smith (Poplar) Ltd.) is not directly fixed to the sides; instead, it is attached to steel bars which are free to move in guide brackets fitted to the sides. This method allows for variations in sheet because of the weather and also permits the height of the framework to be adjusted. A double boarded floor is incorporated with lash jug rings for securing the load. Th sides—in three sections each side—ar 2 ft. high and are held up by specki spring-loaded locking brackets.
The semi-trailer chassis is a Dyso Aeroride Newloader tandem-axle unit. 1 is designed for 20-ton loads and a built, is 26 ft. long. The rear cross member and fittings can, however, b removed so that 6-ft. 6-in, or longc extensions can be added if U.K. regula tions are changed. The running gear ca be repositioned if this is done. Michell 10.00-20 " X " tyres are fitted and othe equipment includes I5.5-in. by 6-in. " S ' cam brakes; a special shroud to protec the brake and lighting connections at th front of the body, and shackles on th chassis main members for lashing dow the semi-trailer on the Channel ferry.
