LOTHIAN Region Transport Department's double-deck buses are now all driver-operated. About 40 conductors and conductresses have been transferred to other duties.
The last bus to operate with a conductress was a 16-year-old Leyland PD3 which — extravagantly, perhaps — was repainted for the :final run before being withdrawn from service in Edinburgh.
Edinburgh first introduced double-deckers — two open-top AECs — 58 years ago. The first covered-top double-deckers were two Morris Commercial Imperials of 1933 and 1934 vintages. How many readers remember those collectors' pieces?
