• European truck manufacturers face some tough years ahead until at least the middle of the 1990s, says Leif Ostling, boss of Swedish truck and bus builder Scania.
At the launch of the company's Streamline cab and turbo compound engine (see page 10), Ostling said the current depression in the West European HGV market was set to continue for some time.
"Last year 190,000 heavy trucks were registered. At the present time the market has fallen off by about 15% implying that registration figures at the end of the year will be at the 160,000 level."
Ostling believes 1991 will be worse: "In all probability, this figure will fall even more — down towards 150,000."
