FOOD RULES • New food hygiene regulations for reefer hauliers begin taking effect from early next year. From 1 April, foodstuffs such as soft cheeses, cooked meats and fish, prepared salads, cream cakes and some pies, pastries and pâtés must be kept at or below 8°C. Vehicles up to 7.5 tonnes are excluded temporarily.
From 1 April 1992, 7.5tonners come within the rules. From 1 April 1993, soft cheeses, pâtés and cooked meats which are usually eaten without reheating must be kept at or below 5°C — but trucks not exceeding 7.5 tonnes may again continue to carry these foods at or below 8°C. A tolerance of 2°C will exist for increases in temperature during transit. Some foods such as chocolates and sweets, bread, biscuits, ice cream, milk, uncooked meat and fish and hard cheeses are not covered.
