to introduce alternative-fuel vehicles into the UK, although it keeps a close eye on trials elsewhere: Nick Bastard, UPS marketing director for the UK and Ireland, says: "We've tested alternative fuel vehicles (CNG and fuel cell) in •• Germany and France over the past years and are looking to use alternative propulsion methods in our UK vehicle fleet when these become commercially and economically viable."
UPS's UK fleet is currently powered by diesel, partly, the company says, because overall CO, emissions are lower than the commonly available alternative fuels. In addition to this, the bespoke UPS bodywork has a smaller frontal area and weighs less than the industry standard equivalent; this is said to equate to an 18% saving over standard vehicles.
