The Elimination of Cast-iron Parts Is One Modern Feature of Boys' Reliance Trailers
A S a result of their extensive experience as transport contractors, as well as in the construction of trailers of various kinds, Alessrs. Henry .Boys and Son, of Walsall, Staffs., have introduced a series of vehicles of this type which incorporate several interesting features.
Cast-iron has been eliminated entirely from the construction of the trailers and steel forgings or rolled sections are used almost exclusively. The main frame is braced to give additional strength in the centre and the substantial axles have forged on them the platforms which carry the heavy semi-elliptic springs.
A ball thrust race supports the load on the turntable over the front axle and inside it is a hardened sleeve which carries the radial load. Below the turntable is a spring which keeps the two parts nicely in contact when travelling at high speeds over rough roads. The forged steel hubs are equipped with adjustable taper-roller bearings and the demountable steel disc wheels can be shod with solid or pneurnatic tyres, although the latter are usually supplied. In each rear hub there is a large internal-expanding brake, the size of those fitted to the 7-ton trailer being 19 ins. by 2i ins. wide. These are operated either by a lever protruding horizontally below the body or by cable from the towing vehicle.
