Formerly the Atego six-wheeler, this has now been renamed the Axor and benefits from the same cab enhancements as the rest of the Atego/Axor lineup. Designed with the weight-conscious UK operator in mind. the Mercedes 6x4 chassis is only partially successful in shaving the pounds and tips the scales a good 500kg heavier than the Foden or MAN six-leggers.
Power comes from the Mercedes 900 Series engine available at 280hp from the 6.4-litre version and with more power from the now expanded 7.2-litre version of the same unit—opt lor the bigger unit. as the 6.4-litre motor is severely low on grunt. Improvements to the cab has answered many of the early criticisms with the Axor multi-wheeler, but the tipper versions are likely to remain a hard ride with tough uncompromising handling qualities. Persistent rumours of an eight-wheeler version of the Axor have so far not come good.
