AT a session of a group of experts of the Inland Transport Committee of the United Nations' Economic Commission for Europe, held in Geneva last month, further study was given to simplifying Customs procedure for the temporary import of commercial vehicles, and the drafting of a Customs convention for the transport of goods by road was continued.
A British proposal was put forward calling for the exemption from Customs duties of pallets and stillages.
The experts were considering extending to lorries and coaches the simplified procedure for the import of private vehicles. The Governments concerned are those of Austria, Belgium, Britalin, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Eastern and Western Germany, France, Hungary, Italy, Luxemburg, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Yugoslavia.
A draft convention prepared in 1949 is provisionally applied to road goods transport. It allows the carriage of goods 1:437 under Customs seal from the office of departure to that of arrival. The final text of an agreement is being prepared and will probably be open for signature this year.
The British suggestion concerning pallets and other platform devices used to simplify handling operations is to be considered at the next session of the group of experts. It is stated that it would apply only to pallets complying with certain 4tandards, which remain to be specified.
