• The Ministry of Transport reminds drivers of new Regulations about driving licences and driving tests which came into force on Tuesday. The main changes are: (1) The introduction of a separate licence group for vehicles with automatic transmission. From June 2 a candidate who passes the driving test in a vehicle with automatic transmission will be given a certificate of competence land will be able to get a licence) to drive automatic vehicles (Group 1I3). He will not be licensed to drive cars and heavier vehicles in Group 1A (i.e. those without automatic transmission) so that if he wants to do so he will have to take a driving test on such a vehicle. The additional groups will exclude three-wheelers in Group 11 so if he wants to drive these vehicles he will have to take a separate test (Group 1A, 7 or 11).
(2) Driving test candidates will not be able to take a test on a vehicle fitted with a dual accelerator control, unless the control has been made inoperable by removal of any pedal, lever, or any other parts which could allow a person other than the driver to operate the accelerator.
(3) Driving test examiners will require candidates to produce their driving licences. If they do not do so, the examiner wit/ be able to refuse to conduct the test. (Drivers are reminded that they should sign their driving licences immediately they receive them: it is an offence not to do so). Drivers who have held full driving licences or who have passed a driving test on a Group I vehicle before June 2, 1969 are not affected.
