A 24-HOUR day and a sevendays-a-week operation at Tate and Lyle's main London factory means that any night or weekend lorry weight-restrictions would cause problems to the company, divisional planning director Geoffrey Lane explained.
"Any restriction on lorry size or movement would have an immediate effect on the production and distribution of our goods in the UK," Mr Lane said, "both within and outside the Greater London area."
An eight-tonne weight-limit would cause too many problems for the company. The huge number of vehicles that would have to be loaded would make its business too difficult.
A 16-tonne ban would entail the building of more loading facilities at the refinery, Mr Lane pointed out. "Customer service would deteriorate as customers would be required to receive more vehicles for the same volume."
