I Truck drivers have been warned again about their killer lifestyles following the publication of a report on tackling heart disease.
Larry drivers, known for their poor diets and lack of exercise, should at least try to live a healthier lifestyle during their time off, says the British Heart Foundation which cofunded last week's report. "While it may be difficult to eat five portions a day of fresh fruit and vegetables when working...drivers need to try to make sure they are eating good food at least at the weekend," says a BHF spokesman.
Drivers should also think about chewing gum rather than smoking In their cabs, and eating fruit rather than sweets, he adds. "These are small changes but over the years they • can have an effect."
Government figures show that skilled manual workers, including lorry drivers, have a death rate due to heart disease of 231 per 100,000 people. The figure falls to 160 for professional workers.
