• The 50 employees of Blackburn-based Wilfred Holden have been assured that their jobs are safe following the company's £1.25m acquisition by Scottish haulier Malcolm Group.
The purchase of Holden, which runs a fleet of 35 vehicles and 50 trailers, was announced as Malcolm announced a 20% increase in annual profits to L8.1m on a turnover which rose 15% to .£58m.
The Linwood-based group, which is Scotland's largest landfill operator, also provides warehousing, long-haul transport and construction services. The acquisition boosts Malcolm's workforce to more than 1,000 and its fleet to 285 vehicles and 850 trailers.
Malcolm already has depots in Preston and Merseyside; managing director Andrew Malcolm says the move will give the group a toe-hold in continental running.
"Our plans are to expand the business, not contract it, and Holden staff will benefit from being part of a larger group," he says. According to Malcolm, the group, which is part of Grampian Holdings, plans further acquisitions.
