THE winner of our prize this week is Mr. P. Sykes, of Heald Green, Cheadle, Cheshire. His idea is designed to assist any mechanic who uses a socket set.
By using a 1-in. B.S.F. nut with the centre hole filed out to fit the brake adjuster square a useful addition to the socket set is provided at low cost. Any number of these attachments can be produced and kept in the socket box for use with the universal joint and speedbrace when adjusting brakes on vehicles fitted with square adjusters. Any damage caused by the spanner slipping ,a seized adjuster is confined to the nut,
this being reasonably soft when compared with the adjuster square—and easily replaceable.
This method. says Mr. Sykes, has been useful on Leyland PD2, Royal Tiger and Daimler Fleetline brakes. Using a Britool ratchet with a 726-in. A.F. socket for the front and a 1-in. A.F. socket for the rear makes brake adjusting easier on the Leyland Tiger Cub and Leopard models.
Comments Handyman: This is a useful addition to the tool kit. Years ago I used prepared nuts in a similar fashion, but to fit into extra long tubular box keys and be operated by the 1-in. square drive.
