NIGHT-TIME RUNNING of heavy trucks has been banned from Settle, North Yorkshire. so that residents and tourists can get an undisturbed night's sleep.
The restriction was brought in with the co-operation of local quarry owners. hauliers and Settle Chamber of Trade through the area's Freight Quality Partnership. Although it's been approved by North Yorkshire County 41111111■11" . , .
Council. the ban will not come into force for a couple of months while details are sorted out. says Bill Isherwood. the area traffic manager.
He adds: "This was a really good example of how the Freight Quality Partnership can work. The quarry owners and the hauliers both seem quite happy with the _ , measures, and we were careful to make sure the times made sense for them."
Most through traffic will remain unaffected, as Settle has a by-pass, while the boundary of the ban takes in lay-bys,so trucks waiting \ to enter can park safely. \ The main reason for the ban is a history of complaints from residents about rat\ tling trucks which start , their journeys to the ■ quarries as early as 4am. The quarries open from 6am. so the 5.30am finish was considered reasonable by the Coundl. The restriction will apply to all traffic over 7.5 tonnes.
