In real terms, the Transit has improved beyond recognition In its 40 years. Viewed relatively, tnough, it has made less progress. That it is fundamentally capable of doing the job is designed for is in no doubt. Its continuing, If gradually diminishing, hold on the top spat of the sales charts proves that. It has good performance and good driver appeal, with a truly comprehensive model line-up.
The sad thing about the Transit Is that it could easily be so much better. One thing apparent while researching the Transit's 40-year history is that however good a job the engineers have done, the accountants have always had the upper hand. The fact that much of the original platform was made to last 35 years is confirmation of this.
We know the Transit is due to be reworked but we don't know how extensive the project will be. If Ford specifies common-rail technology and ESP throughout, tidies up a few bits of in-cab ergonomics and, above all, reduces the noise levels, we'd be genuinely happy to have nothing left to criticise.
