Crashed vehicle register • A central computer file of all accident-damaged vehicle insurance write-offs has been introduced.
The service has been launched by HP Information to protect dealers and customers from the risk of buying vehicles that have been totally written off and then repaired — badly or otherwise.
The Total Loss Register lists more than one million vehicles, virtually all written off since 1983. The register will be updated by 1,000 vehicles on average each day.
Members of the public buying a vehicle privately will be able to check the register through the offices of the Citizens Advice Bureau. Dealers will have the facility to make immediate searches of the register by telephone, Viewdata or Telex via a 24hour, seven-day service.
