THE HARD CORE of London's bash-the-lorry brigade waged a war of intimidation against Archway Road inquiry inspector Sir Michael Giddings and his family, it was revealed recently.
London's evening paper The Standard revealed that Sir Michael had suffered prowlers, abusive and threatening letters, phone calls late at night, smashed windows and at one point a parcel of human excreta.
The intimidation eventually forced Sir Michael to resign. One Archway resident, ardent lorry opponent George Stern, agreed he had led some action against Sir Michael although he denied knowledge of the worst aspects.
During the first session of the Archway inquiry Mr Stern spent half an hour taunting Sir Michael about his health. Would he be able to survive a long inquiry? Ought he not to take out life assurance? Mr Stern asked.
