FELIXSTOWE owes its position as the kingdom's largest container-handling port originally to a Norfolk grain merchant. He was Gordon Parker, chairman of the Felixstowe Dock and Railway Co from 1951-76, who transformed a muddy backwater into a port of world status which dealt with 472,000 containers (nearly 5.2m tonnes) in 1982. Its hopes of becoming a Freeport have, however, been dashed.

A memorial to this man of vision has been unveiled in the port by the Lord Lieutenant of Norfolk, Sir Joshua Rowley. Gordon Parker had a worthy successor in Keith Wickenden, when European Ferries took over, but sadly his career came to a premature end in an aeroplane crash last year.
