A NEW DAILY container service from Aberdeen to Wick has been launched by British Rail, with freight wagons attached to scheduled passenger trains.
The combined freight and passenger service has come about through co-operation between road hauliers, Transport Development Group-owned Sutherlands Transport and BR, and has been made possible by BR engineers who have devised a means of safely marrying the air-braked freight wagons and vacuum-braked passenger coaches.
Sutherland's vehicles take containers to the Aberdeen Freightliner depot where they are transferred to rail wagons forming part of the 1.55pm passenger service from Aberdeen to Inverness. From Inverness, the container wagon goes north on the 5.40pm Inverness-Wick train.
