INCREASED competition in order to i promote better transport facilities and lower costs is the prime aim of a Swedish Government Bill which will revise the country's whole transport policy over the next few years.
The main proposals are: 1, Quicker closures of uneconomic railway lines, with provision for losses on uneconomic lines maintained for social reasons to be met by direct Government grant rather than by cross-subsidization from profitable lines; 2, More liberal road haulage licensing so as to permit an annual increase of about 5 per cent in total road haulage carrying capacity; 3, The rationalization of both p-blic and private transport investment and provision for an increase in the Ministry of Communications staff to co-ordinate traffic planning activities and investment programmes.
