• Polargrip of Cinderford, Gloucestershire has designed studded covers to suit all tyres with wheel diameters from 10 to 15 inches. They cost 2.82 plus VAT and postage per pair, with delivery promised in less than 28 days. Fitting the Polargrip traction aid is claimed to take less than two minutes per wheel: the driver simply places the studded rubber sheets onto the ground and drives over them. Two steel cables fasten the Ebps to the wheels.
Tanfield of Horsham, West Sussex offers an alternative solution to winter grip. Tyre Grip is an adhesive that coats the tyre and lasts for around 30km of driving. The company claims that the sytem gave a 300% increase in grip during tests by the Norwegian State Institute of Technology.
For £99 plus VAT the buyer gets a tank of the adhesive, a small compressor and control unit, and pipelines that deliver the air/adhesive mixture to the tyres. The electronic control unit enables the driver to deliver the mixture from the cab, and the whole system can be fitted by Taxifield-approved agents in around two hours.
