is the basis of a new gas-tight lexible expansion unit for use in the exhaust ystem of a diesel engine. Called the Thermo el sliding expansion joint, it is manufactured
short length of stainless steel tube with the ends "belled" to provide line contact even if there is pipe misalignment. To remain gas tight an interference at operating temperature of zero to 0.005in. is required between the contact surfaces of the component and the bore of the swaged ends of the exhaust pipework. This is obtained by the greater coefficient of expansion of stainless steel to that of the housing material.
