LEADERS of London's 15,000 busmen are to concentrate on getting higher pay for their members, writes our Industrial Correspondent. As forecast in The Commercial Motor last week, they presented the London Transport Board on Wednesday with a demand for a " substantial " increase in pay, They also asked that holiday payments should in future be based on average earnings instead of basic pay.
The decision to go for an unspecified rise in pay was reached only by a four-three majority of the busmen's negotiating committee. It was carried as an amendment to a proposal to demand an extra 30s. a week. By omitting a precise figure union officials will have a freer hand in reaching an agreement.
The claim was based on two arguments— the increase in the cost of living since the last pay rise in June following the _report of the Phelps-Brown Committee of Inquiry, and the increase in wages in industry throughout London and the South East during the same period.
