• Following an intensive test programme, Seamarks Bros. Ltd., of Luton, has placed an order for five Mercedes-Benz 0.302 11 metre coaches, fitted with 45 reclining seats. The coaches are to the standard German integral design, modified for right-hand drive. The only British fittings are the reclining seats.
Mercedes-Benz (Great Britain) Ltd., through whom the new order has been placed, has been trying to establish the 0.302 in the British market for a number of years, and has exhibited at the last three Commercial Motor Shows at Earls Court. The order, which may represent the break-through the company has been seeking, follows the operation day and night of an 0.302 45-seat coach delivered to Seamarks in April.
The object of this exercise was to try and "break" the coach, and a relay of three drivers per day kept the coach running in both London and Motorway traffic with no maintenance apart from topping-up and safety-checks. At the end of 40,000 trouble-free miles, the only maintenance necessary was to adjust the brakes by one notch.
Seamarks has a number of valuable contracts for transporting air passengers between the air terminal at Kings Cross and , Luton Airport. A second Mercedes-Benz coach was added to the fleet in July. Delivery of the five additional coaches is expected in about 4+-months.
