BUS FARES in St Albans have been cut by up to 40 per cent to encourage the use of local buses.
The Hertfordshire city has been divided into two zones, an inner zone, and an outer zone covering journeys anywhere within the city.
The St Albans Farecutter reductions are being made by London Country Bus Services, and are being underwritten for three months by Hertfordshire County Council.
This is Hertfordshire's most ambitious fares experiment yet to encourage extra bus passengers, and will be followed by three other joint fare-cutting experiments between now and early 1982 on rural bus routes in the county. All four schemes will be monitored and passengers opinions canvassed.
