[HE TRANSPORT and General Workers Union (T&G) has negotiated a settlement on behalf of drivers at bulk chemical haulier Groupe SAMAT after they carried out their threat of strikes around the country.
The T&G and SAMAT management were locked into discussions mediated by arbitrators ACAS until late Thursday evening (30 September).
Drivers have been offered a 3.5% pay rise and a one-off payment of £1,000, paid in two instalments.The unionhasreconunended the deal to its members.
This came just in time for the French-owned company based in Barry, South Wales; up to 75 drivers had already gone on strike in Barry, Middlesbrough, Manchester and London and there were plans to down tools for a further seven days (CM 30 September).
"We are pleased for both parties," says theT&G'sJohnToner."ft was a hard negotiation,fraught with difficulties. Both parties had to see a common sense approach. I believe any further industrial action would have been detrimental to the trading position of the company."
SAMAT has declined to comment on the settlement.
