• The West Midland Traffic Area was ordered this week to pay £350 towards the defence costs of Gloucestershire haulier Richard Read Transport, and one of the company's drivers, after the prosecution dropped a case of alleged overloading, offering no evidence to support the allegations.
The incident occured when one of the company's artics was checkweighed at the split level weighbridge on the A40 at Ross on Wye. Traffic examiners alleged that the vehicle's third, fourth and fifth compensating axles exceeded the permitted weight.
The Longhope-based company, and driver Nigel James, pleaded not guilty. Beverley Bell for the prosecution gave no reason in court for the dropping of the case, and all parties refused to comment on the reasons for this move. However, Bell did say that the prosecution made no suggestion that the weighbridge was inaccurate, and stated that the alleged overload was 6.6%.
