A SUM OF Rs15m. in foreignexchange is to be allowed to reputable firms, groups and individuals in Ceylon to import commercial and dual-purpose vehicles, but not cars.
Meanwhile, the Government is considering a proposal that all commercial vehicles that are imported to Ceylon this year should be purchased without batteries.
Deputy chairman of the Ceylon National Chamber of Industries, said: "We have six Ceylon firms manufacturing automotive batteries, and their productive capacity is very much more than the requirements of our country. So there is no reason why we should import commercial vehicles equipped with batteries".
Under a 10-year plan, it has been proposed to operate double-decker bus services in all the principal towns in Ceylon.
