Guy Sheppard is told it's cheaper to buy your own fleet than use subbies.
A WELSH chemicals manufacturer is investing £700,000 on setting up its own fleet after becoming disillusioned with the service provided by haulage contractors.
Flintshire-based Synthite is recruiting 20 drivers and will take delivery of 15 Daf and MercedesBenz trucks from 19 January.
The company had scrapped its in-house fleet in the early 1980s but MD Kevin Jones says contractors no longer provide good value for money: "From our experience Is very difficult to recruit hauliers at the right rate for the job.
"They have been going through a rough time over the past few years and all seem to have aspirations of recovering their losses when they take on a new job."
As well as serving Synthite's Mold plant the transport division will be competing for third-party work in the chemicals sector. Jones says the company has already recruited 14 drivers without difficulty: "You have to pay the right rate for the job. Because we've been operating for 80 years the job has added security."
