RELAND has lifted duty on aany imports — but its Delartment of Industry and :ommerce is still carrying out surveillance on imports.
Under the new rules, textiles re still subject to 'dumping' ules and this means that ountries exporting cheap oods will still be charged duty ,n the cargoes.
At least one operator has eported that vehicles arrying comparatively xpensive British textiles have een held up when garment abels have been found to be aulty.
But an Irish Embassy pokesman in London told :M, this week, that the .ountry was trying to avoid Jumping' and the surveillance was designed to check that products were not merely rexported from Britain to Ireand.
Operators have claimed that heir vehicles have been lelayed for up to 11 days if a nistake has been discovered omewhere in the load. They ire worried about the future of ransport to Ireland.
But there is no comfort for he operator going to Eire. The tuthorities still intend to nforce the rules, come what nay.
