• Drivers in London and the Home Counties have a week to get their Vehicle Excise Duty up to date, or risk fines of up to £25,000.
From 15 June roadside checks by the police and DVLA in London, Essex, Herts, Kent and Surrey will target vehicles running without current tax discs or which have not been registered with the DVLA.
The DVLA says: "At any one time we estimate there are 15,000 unlicensed HGVs on the road, resulting in a loss last year of £23m." Revenue losses from unlicensed cars in London and the Home Counties alone cost more than £33m a year.
Police and other enforcement agencies will be on the look-out for road safety offences including lack of MoT certificate or, insurance, excessive exhaust emission and defective tyres: the campaign will be extended to other parts of the country.
