• The start of the white fish season led to a dispute last week between fish buyers and British Railways in Mallaig over the lack of transport to the South for fish landings. With heavy landings expected on Saturday, BR was able to offer facilities for only half the catch. After strenuous efforts by the secretary of the local Fishermen's Association transport was made available but with no guarantee that the fish would reach Billingsgate in time for the Monday morning market.
Eventually, after union problems which threatened the black-listing of future rail fish traffic to Billingsgate from Mallaig had been overcome, the fish was in fact carried to London by road.
