AN allegation that a haulage firm was prepared to undercut local hauliers was made, and denied, during a resumed hearing before the Western Licensing Authority at Exmouth on Tuesday.
Main Road Haulage (Chiswick) Ltd. applied for a 12-vehicle A licence, mainly for carrying granite and china clay from St. Austell to London and the Midlands; vegetables to Southampton, London and Bristol; imported vegetables from Plymouth to Liverpool, London and other centres; and reformite stone blocks from Plymouth to the Midlands.
At Tuesday's hearing Mr. M. G. Poison, for the objectors, said that if Main Road Haulage had difficulty in getting 1orri6s (as had been claimed) one reason was because the company was prepared to undercut local hauliers.
Mr. R. E. Jackson, until recently traffic manager for Main Road Haulage, said that many hauliers carried at about the same rate as his company. He maintained that 2s. 8d. a mile for a 15-ton vehicle and 2s. a mile for a 4-wheel vehicle were economic rates.
Manager of the company's St. Austell office, Mr. T. Darby, said it was not true that hauliers had complained to him about lowrates. Answering Mr. T. D. Corpe. who represented the applicant, he said the position with regard to obtaining tippers was shocking.
After further evidence on Wednesday, the case was adjourned.
