AT DAF Trucks in Eindhoven, future engine development emphasis is now totally towards turbocharging.
According to Mr van Bezeij, manager, development light engines (which at DAF means all engines except the 11.6 litre), the company's whole policy has changed since DAF started in production in 1967 with a turbocharged engine based on a naturally aspirated design.
Because turbocharging gives better value for money and lower fuel consumption, DAF will concentrate on the concept throughout its vehicle range.
DAF also makes urban distribution vehicles down to 7.5 tonnes gvw (not available in the UK) and Mr van Bezeij claims that there is no smoke problem with the engines at the bottom end in stop/start operation because "we have a very well developed boost control".
Mr van Bezeij told CM that DAF is currently working on an adiabatic engine with an insulated combustion chamber, but not using ceramics "Everyone else is working on ceramics but not us," he said, while declining to say which material DAF is in fact using.
