Mr. Bertram B. Jones, cleansing superintendent to Manchester Corporation, in his annual report, mentions that 211,745 tons of household, warehouse and trade refuse were collected from 228,309 premises within the city during the past year; 781. miles of streets were regularly cleansed and maintained; 39,179 loads of sweepings were removed; and about 491,350 gallons of water and 1,653 tons of sand and chippings distributed.
The department uses 96 petrol-driven vehicles', including 51 S.D. freighters, a Karrier sweeper and collector, six Karrier Colt Majors, 20 Lacre -threewheeled sweepers and 12 tippers.
Government's Raw Deal for Road Transport.
A meeting of members of the West Midland area of the Associated Road Operators took place in Birmingham on Friday last, when Mr. L. W. Cup. well, the area chairman, preSided. Major the Hon. Eric Long, T.D., the political organizer of the Associa.tion, touched on the work that was being carried out from headquarters in London, and urged the need for unity of action. Referring to the forthcoming general election; he said that the cause of the road operator was simply that he should be given a fair and square deal, which he certainly had not received under the last Government, and in this connection he made reference to the emergency tax . on petrol, to the extra tax on fuel oil, and to police traps.
Major Long stressed the need for those present to support the committee in fighting for a just cause, particularly now that the country is facing a general election. ALARM OVER B LICENCES.
That traders view with alarm the present situation of B-licence holders, who are now being restricted to the point of extinction, is a resolution which the Norwich Section of The Motor Agents Association has decided to send to headquarters.
