New 4-5-ton Chassis Featured Amongst a Wide Range of Goods Vehicles of Various Pay-load Capacities Stand 14 THE extensive range of Commer goods vehicles is well represented on this stand. Of outstanding interest, perhaps, is the N.5-type 4-5 tonner. This is shown in chassis form with normal control and -equipped with a six-cylindered, side-valve engine of 85 mm. bore and 106 mm. stroke. Of robust construction throughout, careful design has enabled this model to be produced so that, cothplete with a body of adequate strength, the unladen weight is under 21tons. A single dry.. plate clutch and four-speed gearbox is built unit-wise with the engine, and provision is made for a power take-off. Transmission is by means of a twopiece tubular propeller shaft, equipped with Layrub universal joints, to a spiral-bevel type axle. Bendix duoservo brakes are provided on all four wheels, a separate operating system being used for the hand brake.
This model is also shown in normalcontrol form equipped with a platform body, also as a drop-sided lorry with forward control.
A further new model is the N.4-type 3-4-ton.ner, and this is to be seen with a platform body. A new six-cylindered engine of, 3.04 litres capacity provides the motive power, whilst other modifications from the previous model of this type include the incorporation of Hardy-Spicer needle E44 roller universal joints on the propeller shaft, a redesigned clutch, and a modified rear axle to give greater provision against wear of the working parts. The appearance has been much improved by the adoption of a new radiator of attractive design and alterations to the front end.
Having the same power unit as the N.4-type, the new N.3 2-3-tonner is displayed with a drop-sided lorry body. In this instance, the normalcontrol chassis forms the basis of the machine, the wheelbase of which is 12 ft. 9 ins. The design and layout of the chassis follow closely that of the larger model; it is also available with forward control. It should be noted that each of the models mentioned so far :is available with an oil engine as an alternative power unit. Of interest is a l-2-ton machine with a body specially built for the transport of mineral water.
Three vans complete the exhibit, the largest being the 20-25-cwt. model, having as its basis the type N.1 chassis equipped with a fourcylindered 13.9 h.p. engine which develops 47 b.h.p. The wheelbase is 10 ft., and it is interesting to note that the chassis is available with forward coot:of. 'the two smaller vans comprise a 15-cwt. model and an 8-cwt. model. Both types have fourcylindered engines. Despite the small size of the engine in the lighter van, a three-bearing crankshaft is 'incorporated. The body has a capacity of 80 cubic ft.—Commer Cars, Ltd., Luton.
