Stand 35
ENJOYING great popularity in America, the Diamond-T is now firmly established on this side of the Atlantic, and there is no doubt that it will receive an appropriate share of attention during the period of the Commercial Motor Show.
There are on Stand 35 three examples of this make, oue of which appears as a complete vehicle. This is a horsebox, the body being a product of Perfecta, Bodies, Ltd., Woking. It is described as a utility body and is de-. signed to accommodate three horses. This machine has as its basis Chassis 55, a 3-tonner. It is equipped with a de luxe cab, of a recently introduced design, which affords the driver a high degree of comfort, whilst possessing a: modern and agreeable appearance that definitely creates an idea of speed. This, it should be appreciated, is in no way misleading.
This cab it also to be seen on the other two exhibits, both of which are E46
shown as chassis. They are models 65 and 70-31-tonners and 4-tonners respectively. The general specification of all three is the same. A six-cylindered power unit is installed, having a bore and stroke of n ins. and 4' ins, respectively. Rated at 27.34 h.p., the unit develops 80 b.h.p.
Power is transmitted through a sing e-plate clutch, of ample capacity, to a four-speed gearbox, whence a propeller shaft, incorporating Hardy, Spicer needle-bearing universals, transmits it to a spiral-bevel final drive and fully floating axle shafts. The frame is a pressed-steel structure with side members of tapering sections.
The Lockheed braking system is employed, the drums being of large diameter and width, whilst a simple and easily actuated adjustment is provided for taking up wear of the friction facings. On the two larger models a vacuum-servo system is incorporated.
Space does not permit a full description of these chassis, but their business-like layout cannot fail to be appreciated, whilst numerous details, designed to afford long life, freedom from maintenance and general efficiency, are to be found on every hand, and a careful investigation will be well repaid.—Diamond-T Motors, 414, London Road, Isleworth, Middlesex.
