New Six-cylindered Rear-engined tanner and a 10-cwt. Van. Simplicity the Keynote of the Power Unit
— Stand 64
THE centre of interest of the Trojan exhibit this year is the new sixcylindered 20-25-cwt. van, which has been named the Lowdall. The concern is also showing two of its well-known Senior vans, and another new model, a light 10-cwt. van.
The Lowdall has the power unit mounted at the rear ; its bore and stroke are 2i ins, and 4ff ins., giving a capacity of 2.232 litres, and it is rated at 15 h.p. It is similar in principle to the well-known Trojan two-stroke engine, in which each pair of cylinders has a common combustion chamber so that they fire simultaneously. In this case the crankshaft is, of course, set at 120 degrees, so that the impulses occur with the same frequency as in a sixcylindered four-stroke engine. The simplicity of the design is a marked feature, there being actually only 10 moving parts in the engine.
• The new power unit is mounted horizontally, with the crankshaft running longitudinally along approximately the centre line of the frame. Power is transmitted through a three-speed synchromesh gearbox and thence by a jointed shaft to a worm-type final drive incorporating a differential gear.
n34 The body is built with a very low floor level at the centre, and a platform over the engine at the rear. Rollertype doors are provided at the end and at the side, so that either the high or low level can be used for loading and unloading. The 10-cwt. machine has the fourcylindered engine. The capacity of this vehicle is 80 cubic ft.
The larger of the two Senior vans, which is named the Super, is the more interesting because it is equipped with a body with a capacity greater than that normally used on this chassis, the figure being 140 cubic ft. It is provided with roller shutters at the rear and a drop tailboard, whilst the doors of the driver's compartment slide to open.
The other Senior machine is the standard product, with 120 cubic ft. of body space.—Trojan, Ltd., Purley Way, Croydon.
