A DRIVER formerly employed by I-1 British Road Services described at Aldershot, last week, how he and four men planned how they could steal a B.R.S. lorry and its • load, valued at £30,000. The.man, Arthur Albert Allen, was brought from prison, where he is serving a sentence for his part in the robbery, to give evidence.
Before the court were two more lorry drivers, Victor George Lucas and Harry Nicholas Croxson, who were accused of stealing the vehicle and contents jointly with Allen and Walter Dowsett (also in prison); conspiring with Allen, Dowsett .and others to steal it; counselling, procuring and commanding Allen to steal the vehicle; and receiving, with Allen and Dowsett, the contents of the lorry— cigarettes, tobacco and beer—knowing them to have been stolen. d
The magistrates were told that Allen was driving the vehicle on the night it was stolen. Questioned by Mr. J. H. Fellowes, for Lucas, /Allen agreed that Lucas took no .part in the conversation when the theft was discussed.
The hearing was adjourned until next Thursday.
NO SOUTHEND SHOW
IT is unlikely that the exhibition and demonstration of commercial vehicles which the Southend Sub-area of the Road Haulage Association wished to arrange this month will take place.
It would require approval by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, but in the first instance an individual maker would have to apply for permission to participate. The matter would then be placed before a committee.
The Commercial Motor was informed this week that no manufacturer had yet sought authority to take part in the show. It was thought unlikely that the idea of local exhibitions, other than those sponsored by dealers on their own premises, would be likely to be favoured by manufacturers.
