• Local residents have failed to prevent the continued use of an operating centre they thought had been abandoned two years ago by Dondale Transport, trading as A Lee & Sons. However the times at which vehicles can be started or moved have been restricted.
The company was seeking renewal without modification of its international licence authorising 20 vehicles and 30 trailers based at Pittman Road, Denaby and Denaby Lane, Old Denaby. There were five representations against the use of the latter site — local residents complaining about noise, fumes and vibration and the unsightliness of the site.

North Eastern deputy Licensing Authority Norman Moody ruled that the application was validly advertised in the South Yorkshire Times despite complaints from residents that the newspaper was only taken by about 1 in 10 people in the area.
Director George Lee denied vehicles left as early as 0400 and 0500hrs and returned at any time up to midnight. He said that the company might wish to cease using the site at the Pittman Road Industrial Estate if trade fell away. He denied that the Old Deneby yard had not been used for two years. He said the Industrial Estate site had been obtained with expansion in mind and not as an alternative. Up to 12 months ago Old Deneby was the only operating centre he claimed.
RESIDENTS
The residents argued that it was wrong to spoil a rural village when the company had custom-built premises on an Industrial Estate less than a mile away.
Renewing the licence Moody imposed conditions in relation to the Old Deneby depot that no vehicles be started or moved before 0600hrs Monday to Friday or at all on Saturdays or Sundays.
