• No action has been taken against a licence of Macclesfield hauliers F. Swain & Sons by North Western Licensing Authority Roy Hutchings. despite overloading convictions going back to 1982.
In addition to considering taking disciplinary action Hutchings also had an application to renew the licence in respect of 28 vehicles and 20 trailers before him.
Managing director Donald Millington said the overloading was principally a problem of axle weights on multiple drop deliveries.
Steps taken to meet the problem included leaving a 0.6m (2ft) gap from the headboard, and equipping
vehicles with roller floors as they were being replaced.
Four vehicles were now so equipped. 100,000 had been invested in new premises giving the company improved maintenance facilities.
Hutchings said he was satisfield the company was doing everything it could to remedy the overloading problem.
